Semi-permanent, demi-permanent and permanent hair colour differ in their formula, processing time and how long they last.

Here’s How They Differ from Each Other

Semi-permanent Hair Colour

This type of hair colour does not contain ammonia or peroxide, which means it does not penetrate the hair shaft. Instead, it coats the hair’s surface and gradually fades away over several shampoos. Semi-permanent hair colour lasts from a few days to a week and is a good option for adding temporary colour or enhancing natural colour.

Demi-permanent Colour

Demi-permanent hair colour contains a small amount of peroxide, which allows it to penetrate hair colour, usually between 4-6 weeks. Demi-permanent hair colour is often used to cover grey hair or darken hair without dramatically changing its natural colour.

Permanent Hair Colour

Permanent hair colour contains ammonia or peroxide, which allows it to fully penetrate the hair shaft and permanently change the hair’s colour. This type of hair colour can last up to 8 weeks or longer, and it’s often used to completely change hair colour, cover grey hair or create highlights.
