Laser hair removal is a technique used to destroy hair follicles using laser energy. The laser emits light that is absorbed by a pigment in the hair follicle. Once pigment absorbs it, the light energy from the laser heats the hair follicle and destroys it. This results in long-term hair reduction.

As it affects the pigmented cells, your moles can get affected too. But it does not convert into cancer. Sometimes in the hair removal process, the light energy changes the appearance of the mole, such as black spots appearing on the surface of moles, grey dots on the treated area or the colour of moles may be faded.

But none of these changes results in cancer. Because cancer is caused by DNA damage to the skin cells due to UV radiation. Laser treatment does not cause these types of damage. But it disrupts the cluster of pigment and may even cause it to lift off. The area around the mole may be itchy and cause discomfort for at least 14-15 days.

If you want to go for a laser hair removal but are concerned about your moles, go for an experienced practitioner who can take care of your moles. They cover your moles with some white pencils so that they avoid laser light on the moles and laser the surrounding skin effectively.
