Does Curd Reduce Melanin?
Melanin is there in everyone’s body. And it is produced by the melanocyte cells. The concentration of melanin helps determine the colour of our skin, eyes and hair. But if the concentration exceeds beyond the normal range, you can have hyperpigmentation (the darkening of skin colour). Sources of excessive melanin can include excessive sunburn, hormonal imbalance, unhealthy diet, etc.
So, if you want to reduce melanin, curd can be helpful in this. Fermentation of milk results in curd, which further results in its lactose getting converted into lactic acid. This lactic acid helps lighten the skin colour by reducing melanin. It blocks tyrosine enzymes, which are present in the melanin-producing cells (melanocytes). Tyrosine in melanocytes helps produce melanin using the amino acid tyrosine. So, it inhibits this process to reduce melanin.
Curd helps in skin lightening and brightening and increases cell turnover. That’s why many people use it as a home remedy. But be mindful before stepping out of your house when applying curd or lactic acid products. Apply sunscreen because curd or lactic acid makes your skin highly susceptible to sunburn. If you have more sensitive skin, consult a dermatologist before applying anything directly on your face.
