Why Does the Scalp Often Get Greasy?
The scalp often gets greasy because of natural oil production by the sebaceous glands in the same. These glands produce sebum, a natural oil that lubricates the hair and scalp and to keep it healthy and moisturised.
However, some people’s scalps produce more sebum than others, and this can lead to excess oiliness on the scalp and hair. This can be due to various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, stress and diet.
Additionally, using hair products such as shampoos or conditioners, which contain harsh chemicals, can also contribute to greasy hair and scalp, as these products can strip the hair of its natural oils, causing the scalp to produce more oil to compensate.
Frequent washing can also exacerbate the problem, as it can strip the scalp of its natural oils and make it produce more oil as a result.
To reduce excess oiliness on the scalp, use gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner, avoid using too many styling products, and limit the frequency of washing to every other day or less. Additionally, a healthy diet and reducing stress levels can help balance sebum production on the scalp.
